Keratoconus is a corneal disease characterized by progressive thinning of the cornea and swelling of the corneal structure; if this progression is not stopped, it leads to the development of myopia and irregular astigmatism, resulting in impaired quality of vision and visual acuity.
About this disease, through the National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire-25, the impact of keratoconus on quality of life was assessed and visual performance evaluated in the Saudi population.
The questionnaire was used online to distribute the validated survey through various social networks; then data for a total of 429 patients were extracted, reviewed, coded, and finally analyzed.
The final results? Visual performance is worse in females than males, especially in patients younger than thirty years old, and the quality of vision in patients with keratoconus pathology improved with the use of low vision aids (contact lenses and glasses) compared to those who did not use them.
To summarize, this study conducted in Saudi Arabia confirms the functional impairment of patients with keratoconus, especially in patients younger than thirty years old, women, and those who do not use necessary aids.
