Corneal transplants have always been performed with human tissue taken, after death, from organ donors. But tissue for the corneal transplants has always been in short supply compared to the number of patients requiring it, so this situation has prompted researchers to look for a suitable, safe, effective and permanent solution.
And here are the research results: according to a study published in Nature Biotechnology, in fact, eye implants made from pig skin have restored sight to people with severe visual impairment and blindness.
Researchers worked with twenty patients with corneal damage; fourteen of these patients were blind.
The eye implant was so effective that three of the patients had perfect vision after the surgery, and nineteen people had improved vision.
After two years, the patients had not rejected the tissue or experienced any other complications.
