The most important function of the cornea (with a circular and transparent shape) is to contribute, along with the crystalline lens, to focusing images on the retina. Diseases affecting the cornea can lead to blindness; keratoconus, for example, is a rare eye disease that mainly affects young people. The main symptoms of keratoconus are:
- Distorted vision
- Photophobia and
- Poor vision
Keratoconus in 96% of cases affects both eyes and progresses to the age of 30-40 years and then stops spontaneously.
To this day the causes of keratoconus are not known; however, there is an hereditary predisposition.
